| Advertising Joe Johnston helped invent McDonald’s Happy Meal. That was only one highlight in an advertising career that also helped introduce the Egg McMuffin and Quarter Pounder. He led Haggar Slacks into sports coats, suits, young men’s and women’s apparel. He helped Whataburger introduce breakfast and desert. And he helped Taco Villa become the first Mexican fast food chain to serve breakfast. He has also worked with B.F. Goodrich Tires, Southwest Airlines, Hoover Appliances, KitchenAid Appliances, Braniff Airlines, Terex division of General Motors, Pizza Hut and Purina Mills. Johnston headed the team chosen by Stan Richards to transform his internationally-known design studio into an ad agency. Then Johnston left to open his own agency, which became the most creative award-winning agency in Dallas, and consistently lead his clients to double-digit annual sales increases. His work appeared in the Communication Arts Annual, and hangs in the Advertising Hall of Fame. But with all his awards, he says the hardest one to win was the Effy, for marketing efficiency, from the American Marketing Association. As a journalist, Johnston has written speeches, press releases, technical and training manuals. He’s been published in Dallas Morning News, D Magazine, Texas Monthly, Southwest Times Record, and countless newsletters. He also produced, wrote and hosted “Seeing Is Believing,” on CBS cable TV in Nashville. |
